District Judge Nina Wang reprimands MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell’s attorneys for filing a court brief riddled with AI-generated fake citations and legal misrepresentations.

In a case highlighting the pitfalls of unchecked AI use, MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell’s lawyers have landed in serious trouble after a federal judge discovered that their legal brief contained 30 defective citations, many of which referenced fictional cases and misquoted law principles.
District Judge Nina Wang issued a strong rebuke to attorneys Christopher Kachouroff and Jennifer DeMaster, ordering them to explain why they should not face sanctions or be referred for disciplinary action.

“The Court identified nearly thirty defective citations in the Opposition. These included misquotes, misrepresentations of legal principles, and discussions of laws that simply do not exist,” Judge Wang wrote in her order.
The AI Misstep:
- Kachouroff and DeMaster admitted in court filings that they accidentally submitted an AI-generated draft instead of a corrected final version.
- Under questioning, Mr. Kachouroff further confessed that he had used generative AI and failed to manually verify the citations before filing the brief — a violation of his obligations under Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
- Judge Wang expressed frustration that the truth only emerged after direct questioning.

Background of the Case:
The problematic filing was submitted in February 2025 in an ongoing defamation lawsuit involving:
- Plaintiff: Eric Coomer, a former executive at Dominion Voting Systems.
- Defendants: Mike Lindell, MyPillow, and FrankSpeech (Lindell’s media platform).
Mike Lindell, a prominent supporter of Donald Trump, is known for financing post-election protests in 2020 aimed at overturning Joe Biden’s election victory.
Both attorneys have until May 5 to submit a formal response to the court.
