Los Angeles [US], January 9: In light of the devastating wildfires sweeping through Los Angeles County, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced changes to its Oscar nomination voting schedule.
Originally set to close on January 12, the voting period for the nearly 10,000 Academy members has now been extended until January 14, according to a report by Variety. Additionally, the Oscar nominations announcement, initially planned for January 17, has been rescheduled to January 19.
The Academy’s CEO Bill Kramer addressed members in an email sent on Wednesday, expressing condolences to those affected by the fires:
“We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California. So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you.”
The email also outlined several scheduling changes:
The 2025 Oscars ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, remains scheduled for March 2.
The wildfires, driven by strong winds, have caused significant destruction in Los Angeles County, claiming the lives of at least five people and leaving several others with severe injuries, as reported by CNN.
The Palisades Fire, which is burning near Malibu and Santa Monica, has already destroyed over 1,000 structures, making it the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles County’s history, according to CalFire data.
As the Los Angeles community faces one of its most challenging crises, the Academy’s adjustments aim to support its members and colleagues affected by the tragedy. The extended voting period and rescheduled events reflect the industry’s solidarity during this difficult time, ensuring that the Oscars process continues smoothly while prioritizing safety and compassion.
