Pakistani actress Hina Khawaja Bayat’s video criticising the lack of water in Karachi airport washrooms has sparked conversations about Pakistan’s crumbling infrastructure.

May 30, 2025: Pakistani actress Hina Khawaja Bayat has called out authorities for the lack of basic facilities like water in the washrooms at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport. Her frustration was captured in a video posted from the airport on Thursday, where she highlighted the broader neglect of infrastructure across Pakistan.

“At a time when we should be proud of our country, there’s not even water in the airport washrooms,” Bayat said, adding that people were unable to perform wuzu (ablution for prayers), help their children, or even use the facilities properly.

Bayat didn’t mince words about the government’s misplaced priorities: “Everyone talks about mega projects and development, but who’s fixing the basics? Our airports, our institutions — everything’s falling apart,” she said.

Captioning her video on Instagram, she wrote, “Why have we as a nation become so accepting of poor service, poor systems, poor management, poor maintenance and unending system & institutional damage? Because we always try and justify the wrongs and prioritize useless endeavours instead of focusing on the everyday basic needs of the common citizen.”

She urged Pakistanis to take responsibility and push for fixing essential issues instead of celebrating grand projects. “It’s time we take responsibility and fix things before declaring celebrations,” she added.

Context Of Tensions With India
Bayat’s comments come amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, following India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that killed 26 people.

India has since carried out precision strikes on terror hubs in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under Operation Sindoor and reiterated that peace talks with Islamabad will only happen once Pakistan takes verifiable steps to end terrorism.
“Terror and talks cannot go together, terror and trade cannot go together, and water and blood cannot flow together,” said India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has signalled readiness for dialogue, but India maintains that no talks are possible unless Pakistan stops cross-border terror activities.
