Defence minister links rising aircraft orders to reduced IMF dependence
January 8, 2026: Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said aircraft orders have risen sharply after last year’s brief military confrontation with India. He claimed growing foreign interest in the JF 17 Thunder fighter jet has strengthened Pakistan’s defence profile and could eventually reduce reliance on IMF support.
The remarks followed talks between Pakistani and Bangladeshi defence officials on a possible JF 17 deal. Pakistan’s combat aviation drew attention after the May 2025 aerial clashes with India. Officials say several countries are now studying the performance of Pakistani and Chinese developed platforms used during the conflict.
Experts remain sceptical about the economic impact. Analyst Ayesha Siddiqa said export revenues are limited due to China’s dominant role in the programme. Despite recent defence deals Pakistan continues to rely heavily on IMF assistance including multibillion dollar bailout packages approved in 2024 and 2025.
