Shehbaz Sharif announces curbs after Strait of Hormuz disruption hits fuel supply
April 7, 2026: A major disruption in global energy supplies following Iran’s halt on ship movements through the Strait of Hormuz has triggered fuel shortages across parts of South Asia and Europe, with Pakistan taking emergency measures. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a “smart lockdown” after a high-level meeting, aimed at conserving fuel and managing the growing energy crisis.
Under the new restrictions, markets, malls, and commercial centres across several regions must shut by 8 pm, while some areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been given limited relaxation until 9 pm. The measures also extend to social activities, with restaurants, bakeries, marriage halls, and event venues required to close by 10 pm. Wedding ceremonies at private residences have also been restricted, as authorities attempt to curb fuel consumption. Essential services like medical stores, however, remain exempt.
To ease the impact on citizens, the government has introduced relief measures, including free public transport for one month in cities like Gilgit and Muzaffarabad. Senior leaders, including Ishaq Dar and Ahsan Iqbal, attended the emergency meeting, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. The restrictions come into effect immediately, reflecting the urgency of the crisis as Pakistan grapples with the fallout of global energy disruptions.
