Washington says sustained strikes weakened Tehran, forcing it to seek a ceasefire amid a fragile regional truce
April 8, 2026: The United States has claimed that Iran was compelled to seek a ceasefire following sustained military pressure, with Pete Hegseth describing the outcome as a “historic success” for Washington and its allies. According to him, Iran’s military capabilities suffered significant damage, leaving Tehran with limited options. The remarks come as a fragile truce holds in the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict, with diplomatic negotiations expected to follow.
Hegseth further alleged that Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was seriously injured in recent strikes, claiming Tehran had effectively “begged” for a ceasefire. He argued that Iran miscalculated its ability to challenge the United States, adding that its missile and defence systems had been severely weakened. The US, he said, demonstrated its military dominance, forcing Iran back to the negotiating table under pressure.
The US defence chief also credited Donald Trump with securing what he called a “decisive military victory,” stating that the campaign had significantly curtailed Iran’s capacity to sustain conflict. While Washington views the ceasefire as a strategic win, global observers continue to see it as fragile, with upcoming talks expected to determine whether it can lead to a more lasting resolution.
