Petrol Panic Buying Begins In Pakistan

Punjab government imposes fuel cuts and work-from-home policy amid supply fears

March 10, 2026: Panic buying of petrol and other petroleum products has reportedly begun in parts of Pakistan, particularly in Punjab, as concerns grow over disruptions to global oil supplies. The situation follows tensions affecting shipping routes near the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit corridor. Authorities fear that restrictions on vessel movement could impact petroleum imports to Pakistan and several other countries.

In response to the developing fuel crisis, Punjab’s chief minister announced strict austerity measures to reduce fuel consumption. Official fuel allocations for provincial ministers have been suspended, while petrol and diesel allowances for government officers’ vehicles have been cut by 50 percent. The government has also banned protocol vehicles accompanying ministers and senior officials, allowing only one vehicle for essential security purposes.

The provincial administration has also introduced a work-from-home policy in government offices, with only essential staff required to attend. Public events and official outdoor gatherings have been suspended, and the private sector has been advised to adopt similar measures. Authorities are also monitoring food supply chains across the province, while urging citizens not to hoard essential commodities.
