India reaffirms support as Congress also extends greetings
February 13, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Tarique Rahman after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections. In a message posted on X, Modi conveyed his “warm congratulations,” describing the result as a reflection of the Bangladeshi people’s faith in Rahman’s leadership. The Prime Minister also held a conversation with the newly elected leader, expressing gratitude for the exchange and reaffirming India’s unwavering support for peace and cooperation as a neighbouring nation.
Modi underscored India’s continued commitment to supporting a “democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh,” signalling New Delhi’s readiness to engage constructively with the incoming leadership in Dhaka. He said he looked forward to working with Rahman to further strengthen multifaceted bilateral ties and advance shared development goals between the two countries.
BNP leader Nazrul Islam Khan, who heads the party’s election coordination committee, thanked Modi for his message and expressed confidence that ties between the two nations would deepen under Rahman’s leadership. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also extended congratulations on behalf of the Indian National Congress, highlighting the deep-rooted historical and cultural bonds between India and Bangladesh and reiterating support for a stable and inclusive neighbour.
