PM Modi Holds High-Level Talks in Malaysia

India, Malaysia aim to deepen strategic partnership during Modi’s two-day visit

February 8, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday met ministers and senior delegations from both countries at the Perdana Putra building in Putrajaya, marking a key engagement during PM Modi’s two-day official visit to Malaysia. The delegation-level meeting followed a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour accorded to the Indian Prime Minister, highlighting the importance Kuala Lumpur attaches to the visit. PM Modi arrived in Malaysia on Saturday and was personally received at the airport by PM Anwar Ibrahim, reflecting the warmth of bilateral ties.

The arrival ceremony featured a red-carpet reception along with traditional music and dance performances celebrating shared cultural heritage. Malaysian Minister of Human Resources Ramanan Ramakrishnan and Deputy Foreign Minister Lukanisman bin Awang Sauni were also present. Expressing gratitude, PM Modi said he was “deeply touched” by the warm welcome and looked forward to strengthening friendship between the two nations. The two leaders later travelled together to an Indian community programme in Kuala Lumpur, underscoring the strong people-to-people connect between India and Malaysia.

Following the initial engagements, both prime ministers are scheduled to hold wide-ranging bilateral talks on February 8, with several agreements expected to expand cooperation across defence, security, economy, innovation and new emerging sectors. This is PM Modi’s third visit to Malaysia and his first since bilateral ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024. India and Malaysia share long-standing historical and cultural links, further strengthened by Malaysia’s nearly 2.9 million-strong Indian-origin community, one of the largest overseas Indian populations in the world.
