Bilateral discussions focus on trade, defence ties; extradition of Zakir Naik likely to be raised
February 8, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Malaysia entered its second day on Sunday, with delegation-level talks scheduled with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The discussions are aimed at reviewing progress under the India–Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and setting a future roadmap for enhanced cooperation across critical sectors.
According to diplomatic sources, both leaders are expected to explore avenues to deepen collaboration in trade, investment, defence, semiconductors, renewable energy, digital technology, and education. Several agreements and memorandums of understanding are likely to be signed during the visit, reflecting the strengthening economic and strategic alignment between the two countries. India is also expected to formally reiterate its request for the extradition of fugitive preacher Zakir Naik, a long-standing issue of concern for New Delhi.
On Saturday, PM Modi addressed the Indian diaspora in Malaysia, where he highlighted India’s growing global economic influence. He spoke about India’s expanding trade engagements with regions such as the European Union and the United States, asserting that India’s biggest strength today lies in the global trust and confidence it enjoys.
