Washington, DC [US], January 5: US President Joe Biden honored 19 distinguished individuals with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award, at a ceremony held at the White House on Saturday (local time).
Among the notable recipients were former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, actor Michael J. Fox, U2 frontman Bono, and basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson.
Hillary Clinton received a standing ovation as her name was announced, acknowledging her decades of service to public life. George Soros, founder of the Open Society Foundation, was also awarded posthumously, with his son Alex Soros accepting the honor on his behalf.
Several others were honored posthumously, including former Attorney General Robert Francis Kennedy, former US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, and former Michigan Governor George Romney.
The diverse list of awardees also included renowned personalities such as:
- Spanish-American chef José Andrés
- Entrepreneur Tim Gill
- Ethologist Jane Goodall
- Fashion designer Ralph Lauren
- Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour
- The Carlyle Group Co-founder David Rubenstein
- Science educator William Sanford Nye (Bill Nye)
- Writer and filmmaker George Stevens Jr.
Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi was also named a recipient but could not attend the ceremony due to scheduling conflicts, according to CBS News.
Biden’s Tribute to the Honorees
In his remarks, President Biden expressed deep gratitude to the recipients for their contributions to shaping American culture, society, and global impact.
“For the final time as president, I have the honor of bestowing the Presidential Medal of Freedom on a group of extraordinary people who have given their sacred effort to shape the culture and cause of America,” Biden said.
He emphasized the global influence of the recipients, noting their impact on cities and remote regions alike, and praised their commitment to progress, unity, and justice.
“Together, you leave an incredible mark on our country with insight and influence that can be felt around the globe. You represent your families, communities, and ancestors with pride and appreciation,” Biden added.

“These nineteen individuals are great leaders who have made America and the world a better place. They are great leaders because they are good people who have made extraordinary contributions to their country and the world,” the statement concluded.
