Following India’s precision strikes on terror camps in Pakistan, China calls on both nations to exercise restraint and avoid escalation.
May 7, 2025: Beijing – In the aftermath of India’s Operation Sindoor, China has urged both New Delhi and Islamabad to exercise restraint and prioritise regional peace and stability. The official statement, released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, comes amid heightened tensions following India’s precision strikes on nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
“We call on both India and Pakistan to remain calm and exercise restraint,” said a Chinese spokesperson. “Peace and stability in South Asia serve the common interests of both countries and the broader international community.”
Background: India’s Response to Pahalgam Massacre
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack, in which 26 civilians — including tourists — were brutally murdered by Pakistan-based terrorists. The Indian government stated the strikes were “measured, non-escalatory, and focused on terror infrastructure” associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
China, a key regional power with close ties to Pakistan, has historically urged diplomatic dialogue and restraint during past India-Pakistan stand-offs.
Global Pressure for De-escalation Builds
China joins the United States, United Nations, and several other nations in calling for calm and de-escalation. The UN Secretary-General earlier warned that the region “cannot afford a military confrontation”, while US officials acknowledged the situation and hoped for a peaceful resolution.
India has maintained that its operation was a targeted counter-terror response, not an act of aggression, and emphasized that no Pakistani civilian or military installations were hit.
