The Kremlin announced a temporary truce around Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, warning Ukraine of “adequate response” if violated.
Moscow, April 28, 2025 —
Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a three-day ceasefire in Ukraine, scheduled from May 8th to May 10th. The announcement comes ahead of Russia’s Victory Day on May 9, commemorating the end of World War II.

The Kremlin emphasized that Ukraine is expected to honor the ceasefire. “Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example. In the event of violations of the truce by the Ukrainian side, the Russian armed forces will give an adequate and effective response,” said a Kremlin statement.

The ceasefire declaration is seen as part of Moscow’s efforts to recalibrate international opinion, particularly after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed “very disappointed” sentiments over continued Russian bombings of civilian areas in Ukraine. Trump recently claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was willing to negotiate peace, even suggesting he was prepared to cede Crimea to Russia.
Meanwhile, in a significant development, North Korea has officially confirmed for the first time that its troops have been assisting Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine.
The situation remains fluid as both sides await whether the ceasefire will hold during the symbolic Victory Day celebrations.
