Moscow [Russia], December 27: Russia has declared a national state of emergency following a major oil spill in the Black Sea caused by two tanker incidents during a severe storm on December 15. The spill has contaminated the popular tourist destination of Anapa and its surrounding coastal regions, causing severe environmental damage and posing a threat to marine wildlife.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations revealed that the storm caused one tanker to split in half and another to run aground, resulting in a large-scale oil leak. Strong winds and high waves exacerbated the spill, spreading oil over a vast stretch of coastline.
In response, the Russian government has deployed over 10,000 personnel to contain the spill and clean up affected beaches. Emergency teams are working around the clock to mitigate environmental damage and prevent further contamination of the Black Sea.
“This is one of the most severe oil spills in recent years, and our teams are fully mobilized to control the damage and safeguard the environment,” the Ministry stated.
The spill has had devastating consequences for marine life and local ecosystems. The Anapa resort area, known for its tourism-driven economy, is facing a significant setback as cleanup operations continue. Environmental experts are concerned about the long-term effects on marine biodiversity and coastal habitats.
The national state of emergency aims to streamline resources, expedite cleanup efforts, and ensure effective coordination between federal and regional authorities.
Environmental agencies have begun assessments of water quality and wildlife health, while emergency measures are being enforced to minimize ecological damage and prevent further leaks.
The incident has drawn international attention, with environmental groups urging swift and transparent action from Russian authorities to contain the crisis and address the root causes of such disasters.
As cleanup efforts continue, authorities are urging citizens and tourists to avoid the contaminated areas while officials work to restore the region’s natural balance and prevent further environmental damage.
