Massive overnight offensive leaves at least 6 dead and over 80 injured; Ukraine calls for global unity and ceasefire pressure on Russia.
Kyiv | June 7, 2025 – In what Ukrainian officials are calling the largest assault since the war began in 2022, Russia launched more than 400 drones and 40 missiles in a sweeping overnight attack across nearly all of Ukraine. The offensive, which struck nine regions including Kyiv, Lviv, Chernihiv, Lutsk, and Sumy, left at least six people dead and over 80 others injured, with rescue operations still ongoing.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took to social media platform X on Saturday, stating:
“Today, rescue and emergency operations continued all day across various regions and cities of our country. Over 400 drones, more than 40 missiles were launched by the Russians. 80 people were injured, and some may still be under the debris.”
Major Damage and Casualties
According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, casualties included three firefighters in Kyiv, two civilians in Lutsk, and one in Chernihiv. Several more are feared trapped under collapsed structures due to widespread air and drone strikes.

Retaliation for Operation Spiderweb
Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed the attacks were in retaliation for Operation Spiderweb, a Ukrainian strike last week that targeted a third of Russia’s strategic cruise missile carriers.
The Kremlin described Ukraine’s operation as “terrorist acts,” using it as justification for the widespread bombardment.
Zelensky’s Global Appeal
In his address, President Zelensky criticized the global community’s tepid response:
“Unfortunately, not everyone in the world condemns such attacks. This is exactly what Putin exploits. He is buying himself time to keep waging war.”
He called for immediate diplomatic intervention and greater international pressure on Russia to enforce a ceasefire, stating that diplomacy, security guarantees, and peace can only begin with clear global consensus.
Wider Impact and Global Reactions
This latest escalation marks a significant shift in the three-year-long war, with analysts noting it as the largest single-day air offensive of the conflict. While many world leaders have condemned Russia’s continued aggression, concrete steps toward peace remain elusive.
President Zelensky urged allies not to allow divisions in global unity, warning that Russia’s strategy hinges on weakening international resolve.
