Elon Musk’s Starship rocket lost control and burst apart during its third test flight, cutting short the mission to release dummy satellites.
May 28, 2025 | Elon Musk’s SpaceX suffered another setback on Tuesday when its massive Starship rocket exploded during its third test flight, minutes after launch from Starbase in Texas. The mishap, described as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly,” marked the third consecutive failure in testing the 403-foot-long rocket designed for deep-space missions.

The latest attempt was meant to deploy a batch of dummy satellites into orbit. However, the mission hit a snag when the rocket’s bay doors failed to open fully, preventing the planned satellite release. As the rocket climbed through the atmosphere, it lost control, began to spin, and eventually broke apart, scattering debris over the Indian Ocean.

“Teams will continue to review data and work toward our next flight test,” SpaceX said in a statement following the explosion.
SpaceX commentator Dan Huot told Bloomberg that “some leaks on the ship” led to the rocket’s loss of attitude control, which ultimately caused the spacecraft to disintegrate.
Despite the failure, SpaceX framed the incident as part of the learning curve. “Today’s test objectives were designed to intentionally push Super Heavy to the limits, giving us real-world data about its performance that will directly feed into making the next-generation booster even more capable,” the company said.
SpaceX’s determination to perfect the Starship is part of Musk’s broader vision to make human life multiplanetary. But as the latest test demonstrates, the road to space remains challenging and unpredictable
