State Funeral for Former US President Jimmy Carter Scheduled for January 9 in Washington, DC

President Joe Biden to deliver eulogy as the nation mourns the loss of an extraordinary leader and humanitarian.

Washington DC [US], December 31: The state funeral of former US President Jimmy Carter will take place on January 9 in Washington, DC, with President Joe Biden set to deliver a eulogy at the ceremony, according to CNN.

The Joint Task Force-National Capital Region under the Department of Defense will oversee the formal proceedings, marking a solemn tribute to the 39th President of the United States, who passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia.

President Joe Biden also declared January 9 as a National Day of Mourning to honor Carter’s legacy.

In an earlier statement, Joe and Jill Biden remembered Carter as an extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian. The statement highlighted Carter’s tireless efforts in eradicating disease, advancing human rights, promoting peace, and advocating for the underprivileged.

“With his compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, forge peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, house the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us. He saved, lifted, and changed the lives of people all across the globe,” the White House statement read.

Leaders from around the world, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also paid tribute to Carter. In a post on X, PM Modi expressed his grief, calling Carter a “statesman of great vision.”

“Deeply saddened by the passing of former USA President Mr Jimmy Carter. A statesman of great vision, he worked tirelessly for global peace and harmony. His contributions to fostering strong India-US ties leave a lasting legacy. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of the US,” PM Modi wrote.

During his presidency, Jimmy Carter visited India in 1978, meeting President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy and Prime Minister Morarji Desai. Carter also addressed the Indian Parliament, strengthening the foundations of the India-US bilateral relationship.

Jimmy Carter, the longest-living US president, had spent his final months under hospice care at his home, a decision announced by the Carter Center in February 2023 after multiple hospital stays for melanoma-related complications.

As the world prepares to bid farewell to one of the most influential global leaders, the state funeral will serve as a poignant reminder of Carter’s remarkable contributions to humanity and diplomacy.
