Tarique Rahman likely to take oath as PM around February 17
February 13, 2026: The electoral outcome in Bangladesh is now nearly final, with results declared for 296 of the 299 parliamentary seats. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) alliance has emerged with a commanding majority, winning 213 seats. The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami alliance secured 74 seats, while eight independents and one candidate from Islami Andolan Bangladesh also registered victories.
Student movement leader Nahid Islam won his constituency by a margin of around 2,000 votes. However, his party, the NCP, is projected to secure only about two seats overall. Political observers suggest that the party’s decision to align with Jamaat may have limited its broader appeal among voters.
Although an official announcement is awaited, Tarique Rahman is expected to take oath as Prime Minister around February 17. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already extended his congratulations, signalling readiness to work with the incoming leadership in Dhaka.
