Superior Grocers Opens Amid ICE Crackdown in Las Vegas

July 25, 2025: Las Vegas, Nevada – A new Superior Grocers location, popular among Hispanic communities, opened its doors on Wednesday, July 23, in Las Vegas, even as federal immigration crackdowns continue nationwide. The store, located at 390 South Decatur Boulevard, marks the California-based chain’s 74th store overall and its second in the Las Vegas valley. Nevada is currently the only state outside of California to host a Superior Grocers, which was founded in Los Angeles in 1981.

“We obviously focus highly on the Hispanic, but we also cater to whatever is in the community, so we do our homework,” said Miguel Alarco, Vice President of Operations for Superior Grocers, on opening day.

When asked if the ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) crackdown, which recently led to the closure of the Broadacres Marketplace in North Las Vegas, was a concern, Alarco responded, “We’re not concerned personally from what I can see; it’s not impacting here as much as it is in California. But no, there’s no concern. I think because of the fact that we’re diverse, we should be able to offset some of that.”

Shoppers at the new store also shared their perspectives. Elizabeth Mercha, shopping with her husband, stated in Spanish, “I am here legally, so it is something that does not concern me at all. If you come illegally, try to quickly solve your problem of getting your papers in order to avoid these types of inconveniences.”

Another shopper, Joaquin Avila, expressed some concern but added, “I don’t think they can come to this type of store, which is already a source of income for the family.”

Superior Grocers plans further expansion in Las Vegas, according to Alarco. During its grand opening, the grocery store presented checks to several local groups, including Red Rock Elementary School and Griffith Elementary School.
