The U.S. President slams Justin Trudeau over trade tensions, fentanyl policies, and border security, alleging the Canadian leader is exploiting the tariff conflict for political gain.
Trump Claims Trudeau is Using Tariff Dispute for Political Advantage
Washington DC [US], March 7 – President Donald Trump has accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of leveraging the ongoing tariff conflict with the U.S. as a political tool to bolster his re-election bid.
“Believe it or not, despite the terrible job he’s done for Canada, I think that Justin Trudeau is using the tariff problem, which he has largely caused, in order to run again for Prime Minister. So much fun to watch!” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Thursday.
Trump-Trudeau Clash Over Tariffs & Fentanyl Crisis
The trade dispute escalated after the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, citing Canada’s failure to curb the flow of fentanyl into the U.S..
- Trudeau retaliated with equivalent tariffs on U.S. imports, intensifying trade tensions.
- Trump accused Trudeau’s “weak border policies” of enabling illegal immigration and fentanyl smuggling into the U.S.
- He claimed these policies “caused the deaths of many Americans.”
“For anyone who is interested, I also told Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada that he largely caused the problems we have with them because of his weak border policies, which allowed tremendous amounts of fentanyl and illegal aliens to pour into the United States,” Trump stated.
A ‘Somewhat’ Friendly Phone Call
Trump also revealed details of a recent phone conversation with Trudeau, where the Canadian leader asked about resolving the tariff issue.
“Justin Trudeau, of Canada, called me to ask what could be done about tariffs. I told him that many people have died from fentanyl that came through the borders of Canada and Mexico, and nothing has convinced me that it has stopped. He said that it’s gotten better, but I said, ‘That’s not good enough.’ The call ended in a ‘somewhat’ friendly manner!” Trump shared.
He further mocked Trudeau’s uncertainty about Canada’s upcoming election date, suggesting the Prime Minister is using the trade dispute “to stay in power.”
“He was unable to tell me when the Canadian election is taking place, which made me curious, like, what’s going on here? I then realized he is trying to use this issue to stay in power. Good luck, Justin!”
What’s Next? U.S.-Canada Trade Tensions Remain Unresolved
With both nations doubling down on tariffs, the economic impact of the dispute is yet to unfold.
- Will Canada negotiate a resolution, or will tensions escalate further?
- How will these policies affect U.S.-Canada trade relations?
- Will Trudeau’s response to Trump’s allegations influence his political standing?
With April 2 set as a key deadline for major tariff changes, the North American trade landscape remains uncertain.
