The U.S. President offered marital advice after a video of France’s First Lady playfully pushing Macron’s face made headlines
May 31, 2025: U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday lightened the mood around the viral video showing France’s First Lady, Brigitte Macron, playfully shoving her husband Emmanuel Macron’s face during a trip to Vietnam.
In a joint press conference at the White House alongside billionaire Elon Musk, Trump was asked for any “world leader to world leader marital advice” in the wake of the video. With a grin, the thrice-married Trump quipped, “Make sure the door remains closed.” He then added, “That was not good,” but reassured reporters that the Macrons are “fine” and “two really good people.”
The 78-year-old President, known for his warm ties with the French leader, revealed he had spoken to Macron since the video’s circulation and reiterated that “they’re fine.”
The incident, captured on video as the French presidential plane door swung open after landing in Hanoi on Sunday, shows 72-year-old Brigitte Macron sticking out both her hands and gently pushing the French President’s face. Macron, 47, looked briefly surprised before turning to wave to those outside the plane.
Macron addressed the video earlier in the week, dismissing rumors of a domestic spat and instead blaming “disinformation campaigns” for twisting the footage’s meaning.
During the White House briefing, Musk, who was also present to mark his departure from the Department of Government Efficiency, couldn’t resist a bit of humor. When asked about the black eye he was sporting, Musk quipped, “I wasn’t anywhere near France,” to a puzzled reporter, before revealing that his son was the culprit.
