Trump Calls China Parade “Beautiful” but Slams Xi for Ignoring U.S. Role in China’s Freedom
Washington DC, September 4: Hours after sharply accusing Chinese President Xi Jinping of “conspiring against” the United States as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un stood by his side at China’s largest-ever military parade, U.S. President Donald Trump struck a more nuanced tone, calling the event “beautiful” and his personal relationship with China’s leadership “very good.”
Speaking at the White House during a bilateral meeting with the President of Poland, Trump admitted he was impressed by Beijing’s grand parade marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. However, he expressed clear disappointment that Xi’s speech failed to acknowledge Washington’s sacrifices in helping China during its freedom struggles.
“When they did what they did, I thought it was a beautiful ceremony; it was very impressive. But I understood the reason—they were hoping I was watching, and I was watching,” Trump said.
“My relationship with all of them is very good, and we are going to find out how good it is over the next week or two.”
Trump emphasized that the U.S. deserved recognition in Xi’s address, recalling the American support during China’s fight against Japanese forces in the 1940s.
“I think we helped China very much when they talk about freedom, and I don’t believe the U.S. was acknowledged for helping China to gain its freedom… I heard President Xi last night, and I think the U.S. should have been mentioned,” he remarked.
The massive military parade in Beijing showcased China’s defense capabilities before a global audience. Xi Jinping described China as “unstoppable,” pledging peaceful development while demonstrating military might. The presence of Putin and Kim Jong Un underscored Beijing’s tightening bonds with Moscow and Pyongyang.
Earlier, Trump had used his Truth Social platform to sharply criticize Xi, writing:
“Please give my warmest regards to Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong Un, as you conspire against the United States of America.”
He added that many Americans had sacrificed their lives in China’s struggle for victory during World War II and deserved to be remembered “for their bravery and sacrifice.”
Trump’s remarks capture the contradictory U.S.-China dynamic—a mix of rivalry, mistrust, and personal diplomacy. While Washington views Beijing’s military parades and global posturing with suspicion, Trump continues to project confidence in his ability to manage relations with Xi. The coming weeks, he hinted, would reveal “how good” those ties truly are.
