Trump Sets 5-Week Timeline For Iran War; Cites “Venezuela Model” For Regime Change

Speaking 36 hours into the most significant Middle East conflict in decades, President Trump dismissed concerns over military overstretch, asserting that the U.S. is prepared to sustain high-intensity operations through April.

1. The Five-Week Strategy

When questioned by The New York Times on the sustainability of the current aerial and maritime assault, Trump was blunt:

  • The Duration: “Well, we intended four to five weeks. It won’t be difficult,” he stated.
  • Global Stockpiles: He emphasized that the U.S. is not at risk of running out of precision-guided munitions. “We have tremendous amounts of ammunition… stored all over the world in different countries.”
  • Objective-Driven: The President reiterated that the bombing campaign will only cease once Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities are neutralized.

2. Acknowledging American Losses

The President took a somber tone regarding the three U.S. service members confirmed killed in retaliatory strikes.

  • “Three is Too Many”: While mourning the initial losses, Trump was candid about the risks ahead. “Projections suggested the number could be quite a bit higher… We expect casualties.”
  • Pentagon Readiness: Despite these risks, he insisted the military has sufficient forces to continue the campaign “if we have to.”

3. The “Venezuela Model” & Post-Khamenei Iran

With the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the question of “what comes next” dominated the interview.

  • The Perfect Scenario: Trump pointed to his administration’s recent actions in Venezuela (where former President Nicolás Maduro was seized in January 2026) as the “perfect scenario” for Iran.
  • IRGC Defection: He expressed hope that members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) would “surrender to the people” rather than fight for a collapsed central leadership.
  • Mystery Successors: When asked who should lead a new Iran, Trump claimed to have “three very good choices” already vetted but refused to name them, saying, “Let’s get the job done first.”

War Projection: March – April 2026
