President Donald Trump has announced plans to reopen the infamous Alcatraz prison to house violent offenders and illegal immigrants, triggering criticism over cost, symbolism, and feasibility.
May 6, 2025: In a dramatic new proposal, US President Donald Trump has directed federal authorities to reopen and expand the infamous Alcatraz Island prison as part of his aggressive push to crack down on violent crime and undocumented immigration.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump said the prison would serve as a stark symbol of law and order, writing:
“America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders… When we were a more serious Nation, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals and keep them far away from anyone they could harm.”
Trump claims the revamped Alcatraz would serve to detain “America’s most ruthless and violent offenders”, especially illegal immigrants involved in violent crime.

Located two kilometers off the coast of San Francisco, Alcatraz was operational from 1934 to 1963 and is best known for housing notorious criminals like Al Capone. It was shut down due to exorbitant maintenance costs and logistical issues. Since then, the site has been a popular national park and historical tourist destination.
💬 Criticism & Reactions
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed the move as a publicity stunt, stating:
“Alcatraz closed as a federal penitentiary over sixty years ago. It is now a major tourist attraction. The President’s proposal is not a serious one.”
Others in the opposition have called it impractical and accused Trump of using “law and order” rhetoric for political gain ahead of the 2025 election.

🧾 Historical Context
The FBI reports 36 escape attempts from Alcatraz, all of which failed or ended fatally. The prison became legendary after the Clint Eastwood-starring film Escape from Alcatraz (1979).
Trump has previously used wartime provisions to deport gang members and expanded detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay to house what he calls “the worst criminal aliens.”
