The 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army culminated in a dramatic fireworks display over the National Mall, capping off a day filled with military pageantry, political messaging, and both pro- and anti-Trump demonstrations. The evening’s celebrations were not only in honor of the Army’s founding but also coincided with President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday.

Trump and First Lady Melania Trump watched the early fireworks display from a designated viewing area, surrounded by military officials and dignitaries. The show was moved ahead of schedule due to looming thunderstorms but still lit up the Washington skies as onlookers watched against the backdrop of the Washington Monument.

Elsewhere, tensions escalated during a separate “No Kings” protest in Culpeper, Virginia, where 21-year-old Joseph Checklick allegedly drove a vehicle into a dispersing crowd. He was arrested and charged with reckless driving, though no injuries were reported.
Back in New York City, an estimated 50,000 people participated in similar demonstrations, with at least eight arrests made. The protests underscore a broader wave of resistance against Trump’s second-term administration and the perceived symbolism of the military parade.
The convergence of celebration and dissent highlights the complex national mood: pride in military heritage mixed with deep political divisions, all on a day meant to honor the Army’s legacy and the president’s milestone.
