Air defences activated as Qatar Airways runs special repatriation flights
March 7, 2026: The UAE Ministry of Defence said its air defence systems are actively intercepting missile and drone threats launched from Iran amid the escalating regional conflict. In a statement, the ministry clarified that loud sounds heard across parts of the emirates were caused by the interception of incoming ballistic missiles and drones by national defence systems.
Authorities said the defensive operations were carried out to neutralise aerial threats targeting the country. The developments come as tensions continue to rise across the Middle East, with several countries on high alert due to the expanding conflict and increased missile and drone activity.
Meanwhile, Qatar Airways announced it will operate a limited number of repatriation flights on March 7 from Hamad International Airport after receiving temporary clearance from the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority. The airline said the special flights are intended to help stranded passengers return to select destinations in Europe, even as regular flight operations remain suspended following the closure of Qatari airspace.
