UAE Strengthens Education Landscape in 2024

Abu Dhabi [UAE], December 19: The UAE’s education sector witnessed transformative developments in 2024, highlighted by the announcement of February 28 as the “Emirati Day for Education.” This annual observance underscores education’s vital role in driving progress, development, and nation-building.

Major Reforms and Leadership Appointments

The UAE introduced a comprehensive new structure for education. Key appointments included:

  • Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Chairman of the Education, Human Resources, and Community Development Council.
  • Maryam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as Vice-Chair of the Council and Chairperson of the Quality of Education Centre.
  • Sarah bint Yousif Al Amiri as the Minister of Education.

Additionally, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research was established alongside a General Secretariat of the Education, Human Resources, and Community Development Council. The Emirates Schools Establishment and Federal Authority for Early Childhood Education were merged into the Ministry of Education.

Advancements in Higher Education

  • National Framework: The UAE Cabinet approved a framework for ranking higher education institutions, covering public and private entities.
  • Funding System: A scholarship-based financing model replaced traditional funding for federal higher education institutions.
  • Dubai National University: Dubai announced the establishment of this AED4.5 billion institution, reinforcing its status as a global education hub.

Pioneering Initiatives Across Emirates

  • “Education 33” Strategy: Adopted in Dubai to deliver a student-centric, high-quality education model.
  • IIT Delhi, Abu Dhabi: The first international branch of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi was officially inaugurated, adding to Abu Dhabi’s global higher education offerings.
  • Abu Dhabi Declaration: This strategic framework for higher education and scientific research was adopted at the 19th Conference of Arab Ministers of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
  • Al Dhaid University, Sharjah: A new campus spanning 412,000 square metres, accommodating 2,000 students, was inaugurated in September.

The UAE’s continuous investment in education, research, and innovative strategies reaffirms its commitment to becoming a global leader in knowledge and development.
