Both nations escalate attacks with drones and missiles, heightening global tensions as Trump vows to end the conflict.

Washington, DC [US], January 16: As President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration approaches, Ukraine and Russia have intensified their conflict with a series of drone and missile strikes, according to CNN. Both sides aim to gain a strategic advantage in the ongoing war, now entering its fourth year.

Ukraine’s Largest Strike Yet

Ukraine launched its “most massive” offensive against Russia overnight Monday into Tuesday, targeting military and oil facilities deep inside Russian territory. The attack involved six US-made long-range ATACMS ballistic missiles, marking a significant escalation.

The strikes followed approval from outgoing US President Joe Biden in November, allowing Ukraine to use American long-range missiles. Ukrainian officials pledged to sustain such actions “until the Russian Federation’s armed aggression against Ukraine is completely stopped.”

Russia’s Retaliation

In response, Russia launched a large-scale assault on Ukraine overnight into Wednesday, focusing on the nation’s energy infrastructure. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that over 40 Russian missiles targeted key facilities, with 30 successfully intercepted. More than 70 attack drones were also deployed.

“Another massive Russian attack,” Zelensky stated. “It’s the middle of winter, and their target remains our energy sector, aiming to disrupt normal life for our citizens.”

Ukraine’s state energy company, Ukrenergo, temporarily cut power to prevent a system collapse, restoring electricity by Wednesday morning.

The Ongoing Threat of Escalation

Russia has warned that Ukraine’s use of ATACMS missiles could provoke the firing of its intermediate-range hypersonic missile, the “Oreshnik,” which was previously deployed in November.

Trump’s Role in the Unfolding Conflict

As Trump prepares to take office on January 20, he has pledged to swiftly end the war, though he has provided few specifics on his approach. His administration’s actions could significantly alter the dynamics of the conflict.

“The world watches with uncertainty as Trump’s presidency nears, and both Ukraine and Russia intensify their efforts to tip the balance in their favor,” CNN reported.
