Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir’s contrasting appearances draw attention as US and Iran begin crucial peace talks in Islamabad.
April 11, 2026: All eyes were on Pakistan as leaders from Iran and a US delegation led by JD Vance arrived in Islamabad for high-stakes talks following a fragile ceasefire. However, the spotlight quickly shifted to General Asim Munir, who received both delegations instead of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif—a move widely seen as highlighting the military’s strong influence over foreign policy.
Particular attention was drawn to Munir’s contrasting appearances during the receptions. He welcomed the Iranian delegation—led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Abbas Araghchi—in military uniform, but later greeted the US delegation in a formal suit at Nur Khan Air Base. The shift, dubbed “uniform diplomacy,” is being interpreted as a calculated effort to balance military authority with diplomatic signaling. Munir has previously adopted similar attire in meetings with US leaders, including Donald Trump.
The peace talks between the United States and Iran are expected to begin with separate discussions before any joint engagement. The US delegation also includes Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, while Iran is likely to raise concerns over Israel’s actions in Lebanon. While there is cautious optimism, ongoing regional tensions and Pakistan’s own challenges with Afghanistan add complexity to the already delicate negotiations.
