JD Vance is leading a high-level United States delegation to Pakistan to initiate crucial peace talks with Iran, marking a significant diplomatic effort following weeks of conflict.

Ahead of departure, Vance expressed cautious optimism, stating that negotiations could be positive if both sides engage sincerely. He emphasised that Donald Trump has provided “clear guidelines” for the talks, signalling a structured approach from Washington.

The American delegation also includes key figures such as Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and senior advisor Jared Kushner. Reports suggest that Iran prefers Vance to lead the discussions, viewing him as more balanced compared to other US representatives.

These talks come in the backdrop of a fragile two-week ceasefire announced by President Trump. The truce is conditional on Iran ensuring the “complete, immediate, and safe” reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route.

While Iran has briefly reopened the waterway—helping stabilise global markets—major issues remain unresolved. These include sanctions, Tehran’s nuclear programme, and long-term control of the Strait, all of which are expected to dominate the negotiations.

Pakistan is playing a key mediating role, hosting the high-stakes dialogue under tight security. The outcome of these talks could determine whether the current ceasefire evolves into a lasting peace agreement or collapses into renewed tensions.
