Sergio Gor Visits Sri Lanka, Maldives To Boost Security, Trade Ties
March 19, 2026: Sergio Gor, the United States Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, has launched a key diplomatic tour across the Indian Ocean region, beginning with Sri Lanka. The visit, scheduled from March 19 to 24, aims to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance regional security cooperation. Gor will also travel to Maldives, where he is set to mark 60 years of diplomatic ties between Washington and Malé, underlining the growing importance of the region in global geopolitics.
During his meetings in Colombo, Gor is expected to focus on maritime security, protection of critical sea lanes, and expansion of trade partnerships. These discussions align with the United States’ broader Indo-Pacific strategy, which emphasizes maintaining a free and open regional order. With major global trade and energy routes passing through the Indian Ocean, the region remains central to US strategic priorities amid increasing geopolitical competition.
In the Maldives, Gor’s agenda includes strengthening defence cooperation, supporting infrastructure development, and boosting economic diversification. The US State Department reiterated its commitment to regional stability, highlighting strong partnerships with both nations. Notably, Gor’s visit comes shortly after his appointment as US Ambassador to India in January 2026 under Donald Trump, reflecting Washington’s renewed focus on securing maritime routes and deepening alliances across the Indo-Pacific.
