High-stakes diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran are set to begin in Islamabad, with both sides initially opting for indirect negotiations to extend a fragile ceasefire.
The discussions, hosted by Pakistan, aim to turn the current two-week ceasefire into a more stable and long-term agreement. However, deep-rooted mistrust continues to shape the engagement, with both delegations expected to remain in separate rooms during the first phase.
Indirect Talks Reflect Ongoing Tensions
Despite being under the same roof, representatives from Washington and Tehran will not engage face-to-face initially. Instead, a “proximity diplomacy” format will be followed, where Pakistani officials will act as intermediaries, conveying messages between the two sides.

The Iranian delegation has already arrived in Islamabad, while the US team is expected shortly. Both sides will stay at the same venue under heavy security arrangements, as the Pakistani capital has been placed on high alert for the sensitive negotiations.
Ceasefire Extension Is Key Focus
The talks come against the backdrop of a recent conflict that began in late February, involving coordinated strikes by the US and Israel on Iranian military and nuclear facilities. Iran’s retaliation, including disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, had significant global economic repercussions, especially on oil supply chains.
With the current ceasefire set to expire on April 22, extending the truce remains the primary objective. However, major issues—including sanctions, Iran’s nuclear programme, and regional conflicts—continue to pose challenges.
Pakistan Positions Itself as Mediator
