Washington DC [US], January 5: The US State Department has formally notified Congress about an $8 billion arms deal with Israel, which includes bombs, artillery shells, guided missile systems, and GPS technology for precision targeting, according to a report by The New York Times.
The deal, one of the largest under President Joe Biden’s administration, is expected to span several years, with certain munitions, including 2,800 MK-82 bombs—500-pound unguided explosives—potentially being delivered as early as this year.
A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, mentioned that $6 billion of the total package will focus on bombs and GPS guidance systems, while the rest covers additional advanced weaponry and support systems.
This arms package is viewed as a strategic move to strengthen Israel’s military capabilities amid ongoing conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes on Saturday reportedly killed at least 70 Palestinians in 30 separate attacks across Gaza, with many victims being children, according to medical sources cited by Al Jazeera.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz acknowledged ongoing negotiations aimed at securing the release of hostages held by Hamas. Katz spoke with the parents of Liri Elbag, one of the hostages featured in a recent Hamas video.
“All parties are working in every possible way to bring Liri home as soon as possible, along with all the abductees,” Katz shared on social media platform X.
In the latest video released by Hamas, 19-year-old Elbag referenced the New Year, but there is no conclusive evidence that the footage was filmed recently. Elbag was among those abducted during the October 7 cross-border attack by Hamas.
In a parallel effort, Israel has sent a delegation to Doha, Qatar, to resume negotiations concerning a hostage-ceasefire agreement. The team comprises representatives from Mossad, Shin Bet, and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office confirmed the delegation’s visit, indicating that discussions are ongoing for a potential resolution.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a large-scale terror attack on Israel, resulting in over 1,200 deaths, including foreign nationals. The attack included mass abductions, sexual assaults, and widespread destruction. Over 250 individuals were taken hostage, with approximately 100 believed to still be alive.
The conflict continues to escalate, with diplomatic and military efforts ongoing on multiple fronts.
