Lindsey Graham Links Russian Oil Purchases To Trade Pressure
January 6, 2026: US Senator Lindsey Graham claimed India’s ambassador to Washington Vinay Kwatra asked him to convey a request to President Donald Trump for relief from US tariffs. Graham said the envoy explained that India was reducing its purchases of Russian oil during a meeting at India House.
Graham argued that tariffs were necessary to pressure countries buying Russian crude and claimed such measures forced India to cut imports. Trump said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was aware of US concerns and warned tariffs on India could be raised quickly despite praising Modi personally.
India has not responded to the remarks. New Delhi maintains its Russian oil imports are driven by energy security needs and affordability. India became a major buyer of discounted Russian crude after Western nations reduced purchases following the Ukraine war.
