US Warns Against Crackdowns Amid Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh

Washington, DC [US], November 19: The United States has made it clear to Bangladesh that it does not support any government-led violent crackdowns on peaceful protests. This comes in the wake of recent clashes in Chittagong, where members of the Hindu community faced law enforcement action after a controversial Facebook post criticizing ISKCON sparked unrest.

When asked about the situation of minorities and government responses to protests in Bangladesh, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized America’s stance.

"I'm not going to speak to private diplomatic engagements from here, but we have made it clear to the government of Bangladesh, as we do to countries around the world, that we support the right to peaceful protest and that no government should engage in violent crackdowns on peaceful demonstrations," Miller said during a press briefing.

Indian Government's Response

India has also condemned the November 6 attacks on the Hindu community in Chittagong, with concerns about rising communal tensions. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the issue during a media briefing in New Delhi.

"We have observed that there have been attacks on the Hindu community in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Their properties and business establishments have been looted following incendiary posts on social media targeting Hindu religious organisations," Jaiswal stated.

He urged the Bangladesh government to take decisive action against extremist elements and ensure the community's safety.

"It is understood that extremist elements are behind these posts and the subsequent illegal, criminal activities. Such incidents are bound to create further tensions in the community. We once again urge the Government of Bangladesh to take strong measures to ensure the safety of Hindus and act decisively against extremist elements," he added.

Escalation in Chittagong

The situation in Chittagong took a violent turn, with clashes between members of the Hindu community and law enforcement forces. Reports from the Bangla daily Prothom Alo indicate that the confrontation prompted joint operations by police and army forces, during which blank shots were fired to disperse crowds.

The attacks on the Hindu community have drawn international attention, with both the United States and India urging Bangladesh to address these incidents and ensure communal harmony.
