Red Sea Oil Facility Targeted Amid Escalating Gulf Attacks
March 19, 2026: A refinery operated by Saudi Aramco at the Red Sea port of Yanbu was targeted in an aerial attack on Thursday, according to reports. The facility, known as SAMREF, is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and ExxonMobil. While the strike caused limited visible damage, it followed evacuation warnings issued by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for major oil installations across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar.
The attack comes amid a broader escalation in the region’s energy conflict, with key infrastructure increasingly under threat. A viral video showing flames at the refinery surfaced online, though it could not be independently verified. The strike follows earlier damage to Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City, one of the world’s largest LNG hubs, further intensifying concerns over the safety of global energy supplies.
The situation is particularly critical as the Strait of Hormuz—a route that handles nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil—remains effectively shut due to the ongoing conflict. With this key transit point disrupted, Yanbu has emerged as a crucial alternative export hub for Gulf oil shipments, raising fears of further instability in global energy markets if attacks continue.
