“You Look Fabulous In That Suit”: Reporter to Zelenskyy Who Previously Criticised Him

There were serious conversations at the White House about Ukraine’s future, security assurances, and possible peace talks with Russia. But a lighter banter about President Zelenskyy’s suit made the meeting more fun.

Washington, DC [US], August 19: On Monday, a tense and high-stakes meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took an unexpected turn when a reporter complimented Zelenskyy’s suit and everybody inside the White House started laughing.

Brian Glennabout, a pro-Trump reporter, said, “First of all, President Zelensky, you look great in that suit.” This was the moment. Glenn’s comment meant more because he had already reprimanded Zelenskyy for not dressing formally when he visited the White House in February. Trump instantly joined in and said, “I said the same thing.”

Zelenskyy quickly replied with a joke, “And you’re in the same suit.” The playful conversation made many grin and broke the tension of a gathering that was mostly about conflict, diplomacy, and Ukraine’s uncertain future. Later, Glenn said he was sorry for what he had said before and told Zelenskyy he looked “wonderful.”

Voting in Ukraine In the Middle of War

Zelenskyy made it clear that he was open to having elections in Ukraine after a possible peace accord. He said, “Yes, of course, I am open to holding elections, but we have to do them in a safe way.” “We need safety to hold elections.”

The Ukrainian president’s words made it clear how bad things are at home, where frequent attacks have made it almost impossible to hold free and fair elections without foreign security assurances.

Trump on Ceasefire vs. Peace

Reporters also asked Trump about his earlier warning that there would be “severe consequences if a ceasefire is not agreed to.” This time, though, Trump downplayed the prospect of a ceasefire, saying that his main goal is to reach a long-term peace accord.

“I don’t think they need a ceasefire.” I didn’t make any ceasefires… I appreciate the idea because it stops the murdering right away, but it could not be good for one side in the long run. Trump said, “The deals I’ve made in the past were peace deals, not temporary ceasefires.”

Trump also brought up one of the war’s most delicate issues: Ukraine’s possible membership in NATO. He was careful with his comments, but he did say that Russia had always been against Ukraine joining the alliance.

Long before President Putin, people constantly said that Ukraine would never be able to join NATO. We haven’t talked about it yet, but we will. Trump added, “That’s part of what we’re working on: giving them strong protection and security.”

Talks with Putin and a possible meeting with three people

Before the meeting, Trump said he had talked to Russian President Vladimir Putin indirectly and thought they would talk on the phone directly soon. He said that a future meeting between him, Zelenskyy, and Putin may be the key to ending the war.

“If we don’t have a trilateral, the conflict will go on. He responded, “If we do, there’s a good chance of ending it.”

European Leaders Work Together

The summit in Washington wasn’t simply between two countries; it turned into a demonstration of support from all over the world. European leaders, such as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, all took part in the talks.

Their participation showed that Europe is serious about protecting Ukraine’s independence and reaching a full peace agreement after the war.
