December 13, 2024: Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect arrested for the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, was not a client of the health insurance giant, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD). Police investigators have suggested that Mangione’s motive for targeting Thompson may have stemmed from his deep resentment of the company’s size and influence, rather than any personal grievance as a customer.
Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny revealed that Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, was aware of UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference being held at a Manhattan hotel on the day of the murder. Although Mangione was not a customer of the company, he was reportedly familiar with UnitedHealthcare’s position as the largest health insurance provider in the U.S., which may have played a role in his decision to target the CEO.
Mangione, who was on the run for five days after the shooting, was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania. He now faces multiple charges, including murder. During his arrest, authorities found a manifesto in which Mangione expressed his disdain for health insurance companies, accusing them of prioritizing corporate greed over people’s well-being. This document further fueled theories that his attack on Thompson was a response to the insurance industry’s perceived exploitation of individuals.
The police also discovered disturbing evidence, including writings by Mangione in which he fantasized about using a firearm to target corporate CEOs. Additionally, investigators recovered a 3D-printed gun that matched shell casings found at the scene of the crime. Notably, the 9mm casings had the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose” engraved on them—titles from a critical book on the insurance industry.
Mangione was denied bail during his extradition hearing in Pennsylvania and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
