Mahindra & Mahindra posts 22.3% YoY growth in Q1 FY26 domestic sales, surpasses Hyundai India, while Tata Motors exits top 3 amid flat industry-wide performance.
July-16, 2025: In a significant reshuffling of India’s automobile industry rankings, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has emerged as the second-largest automaker in the domestic market for Q1 FY26, overtaking Hyundai Motor India for the first time in a quarterly period. The development comes as the overall industry grapples with stagnant growth, making gains and losses among top players more notable.

According to the latest sales data, M&M recorded a 22.3% year-on-year growth, selling 1,52,067 units between April and June 2025, up from 1,24,248 units in the same period last year. In contrast, Hyundai saw an 11.5% YoY decline, managing 1,32,259 units, down from 1,49,455 units.
While Mahindra surged ahead in domestic performance, Hyundai retained dominance in exports, selling 48,140 units overseas compared to Mahindra’s 5,950 units during the same period.
Tata Motors Falls to Fourth Place
In another major shift, Tata Motors, once a strong contender for the second spot, has now fallen to fourth in the rankings. The company reported a 9.6% YoY drop in domestic sales, down to 1,29,369 units from 1,43,232 units. Its exports also remained modest at just 1,035 units.
Maruti Suzuki Maintains Top Position Despite Decline
Maruti Suzuki India continues to dominate the passenger vehicle segment, albeit with a 6% YoY drop in Q1 FY26. The automaker sold 3,93,572 units domestically, down from 4,19,114 units last year. On the global front, Maruti exported 96,181 units, maintaining strong international presence.
Two-Wheeler Segment: Honda Closes in on Hero
In the two-wheeler market, Hero MotoCorp retained its crown by selling 13,02,657 units. However, Honda Motorcycles & Scooters India is now a close second, selling 12,28,993 units, trailing Hero by just 73,664 units. This gap suggests a highly competitive outlook for the remainder of the fiscal year.
