Maruti Suzuki India on Thursday said it will challenge an order passed by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Raipur, which directed the company to replace a customer’s Grand Vitara with a new E20-compatible vehicle or refund the purchase price over alleged engine problems linked to ethanol-blended petrol.

The automaker said the commission’s findings overlooked key evidence, including fuel contamination, and maintained that the vehicle was fully compatible with E20 fuel.

Maruti Says Vehicle Was E20-Compatible

In a statement, Maruti Suzuki said it had taken note of the consumer forum’s order and reiterated that the customer’s vehicle was designed to operate with E20 fuel, as clearly mentioned in the owner’s manual.

The company also claimed that fuel samples collected from the vehicle showed signs of contamination, which it believes contributed to the reported engine issues.

According to the automaker, several important facts were not adequately reflected in the commission’s ruling.

Company to Appeal Verdict

Maruti Suzuki said it would pursue legal remedies against the order.

“The company will take necessary steps to challenge the order before the appropriate higher forum in accordance with law.”

The company added that it remains committed to delivering high standards of quality, safety and customer satisfaction through its engineering, manufacturing and quality control processes.

Consumer Forum Ruled in Customer’s Favour

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Raipur, had ruled in favour of the customer, who alleged that the vehicle repeatedly developed engine problems after using E20 ethanol-blended petrol.

The forum directed Maruti Suzuki to either:

  • Replace the customer’s Grand Vitara with a new E20-compatible model, or
  • Refund the full purchase price of the vehicle.

E20 Fuel Debate Continues

The case has reignited discussions around the compatibility of E20 fuel, which contains 20% ethanol blended with petrol.

While automakers and industry bodies have consistently maintained that certified E20-compatible vehicles can safely use the fuel, the Raipur consumer forum’s order has drawn attention to consumer concerns regarding engine performance and fuel quality.

Maruti Suzuki’s appeal is expected to provide further legal clarity on manufacturer liability in cases involving alleged fuel-related vehicle defects.
