Reliance Industries is accelerating its digital transformation journey by integrating artificial intelligence and advanced technologies across its energy operations. Speaking at the company’s 49th Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2026, Executive Director Anant Ambani announced that the Jamnagar refinery is moving towards becoming the world’s first fully autonomous refinery.

The initiative is part of Reliance’s broader strategy to improve efficiency, strengthen operational resilience and maintain its leadership position in the global oil-to-chemicals (O2C) sector.

AI Driving The Future Of Refining

According to Anant Ambani, Reliance has already deployed several AI-powered systems across its energy business.

These include:

  • AI-driven feedstock optimisation platforms
  • Digital logistics management systems
  • Smart contract execution tools
  • Automated supply chain solutions

The AI platform helps identify the most efficient crude oil blends, while digital logistics tools improve vessel management, transportation and supply chain operations.

Building on these capabilities, Reliance is now working towards transforming Jamnagar into an end-to-end autonomous refinery with minimal human intervention.

Strong O2C Performance Despite Global Challenges

Reliance’s Oil-to-Chemicals (O2C) business delivered strong financial performance during FY26 despite volatility in global energy markets.

Key highlights include:

  • Revenue increased 5.7% to ₹6.62 lakh crore
  • EBITDA rose 10.1% to ₹60,546 crore

The growth was achieved despite disruptions caused by the Strait of Hormuz crisis, which impacted global crude oil supplies, freight costs and insurance rates earlier this year.

How Reliance Managed The Strait Of Hormuz Crisis

The company credited its diversified sourcing strategy and flexible logistics network for maintaining near-full refinery operations during the disruption.

Reliance also significantly increased LPG supplies during the period to support domestic energy demand.

Its integrated refining and petrochemical infrastructure, feedstock flexibility and gasifier systems helped minimise operational challenges and maintain production stability.

Expansion Plans Continue

Beyond refinery automation, Reliance is also expanding its manufacturing and energy capabilities.

Major projects currently underway include:

Dahej PTA Plant

A new 3-million-tonne Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) facility is being developed at Dahej to strengthen the company’s petrochemical value chain.

Hazira Carbon Fibre Facility

A carbon fibre manufacturing plant is under development at Hazira and is expected to cater to high-growth sectors such as:

  • Wind energy
  • Hydrogen infrastructure
  • Defence manufacturing
  • Advanced industrial applications

KG-D6 Continues To Play Key Role

Reliance’s KG-D6 gas block remains a major contributor to India’s domestic energy production.

The company revealed that the block currently contributes nearly 30% of India’s natural gas output, producing close to 26 million metric standard cubic metres of gas per day.

The Future Of Digital Energy

The announcement reflects Reliance’s growing focus on combining artificial intelligence, automation and digital technologies with traditional energy operations.

If successful, the Jamnagar project could become a global benchmark for autonomous refining, demonstrating how AI can improve efficiency, optimise resources and enhance operational reliability in one of the world’s largest refining complexes.

With continued investments in technology, manufacturing and energy infrastructure, Reliance is positioning itself at the forefront of the next phase of industrial transformation.
