Google is officially merging ChromeOS with Android to unify development, boost performance, and enhance phone-laptop compatibility—without changing the user experience, for now.
New Delhi, July 15, 2025 — Google has officially confirmed it is merging its two operating systems — ChromeOS and Android — into a single, unified platform. This strategic move is expected to accelerate development, improve performance, and offer a more seamless experience across Android-powered smartphones and ChromeOS-based laptops.
The announcement builds on plans revealed last year, where Google said ChromeOS would transition to Android’s foundational architecture, including its Linux kernel and core frameworks. Now, the picture is becoming clearer thanks to an interview with Sameer Samat, Google’s Head of Android Ecosystem, published by TechRadar.
“We’re building the ChromeOS experience on top of Android’s underlying technology to unlock new levels of performance, iterate faster, and make your laptop and phone work better together,” said Samat on X (formerly Twitter).
Why Google Is Doing This
The merger is part of a broader strategy to streamline development and deepen AI integration, especially as Android 16 gears up to offer more PC-like features — such as desktop-style app windowing for tablets and external display support. The goal is to modernize both platforms behind the scenes while delivering a more cohesive cross-device experience.

Despite the architectural overhaul, Google has no immediate plans to change the ChromeOS user interface or experience. This aligns with ChromeOS’s strong presence in education and enterprise sectors, where consistency and reliability are key.
According to reports from 9to5Google, Chromebook adoption continues to grow steadily in schools and workplaces. A dramatic visual redesign might have disrupted that progress. Instead, Google is focusing on performance improvements and faster iteration cycles, thanks to the shared Android codebase.
