However, scientists believe this unusual strategy could become one of the most effective tools in the fight against mosquito-borne diseases. Through its Debug project, Google’s parent company Alphabet is exploring the release of up to 64 million mosquitoes carrying a naturally occurring bacterium called Wolbachia in parts of California and Florida.
