Sanjay Dutt’s intense political drama Aakhri Sawal saw an upward trajectory in its ticket sales on Saturday, May 16, 2026, though the overall commercial picture remains heavily strained. Following a disastrous opening day that yielded a meager ₹40 lakh, the film registered an 82.5% growth on Day 2, pulling in ₹73 lakh nett across 1,894 shows in India.

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, this brings the movie’s two-day domestic nett total to ₹1.13 crore (₹1.35 crore gross). Internationally, the film failed to find an audience, bringing in a negligible ₹15 lakh gross, which positions its cumulative worldwide gross at a weak ₹1.50 crore.

The Ideological Clash

While the box office numbers tell a story of struggle, the film’s screenplay handles deeply provocative and sensitive themes. Aakhri Sawal centers around Vicky, an erratic but brilliant scholar who triggers a massive national controversy when his heavily researched thesis on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is abruptly rejected.

Vicky publicly accuses his highly respected academic mentor, Professor Gopal Nadkarni, of deep-seated institutional bias. The localized university conflict spirals completely out of control when a sensationalist prime-time news anchor and a politically ambitious activist weaponize the dispute, transforming an academic disagreement into a hyper-polarized, nationally televised public trial.

The Multi-Crore Mountain

As the narrative progresses, the battle of wits between student and mentor morphs into a high-stakes psychological war, aggressively dissecting highly sensitive milestones in Indian history, including the Emergency and the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

Unfortunately, this complex thematic depth hasn’t translated into massive theatrical footfalls. Trade analysts point out that for a film produced on an estimated budget of ₹30 to ₹40 crore, a two-day haul barely crossing the ₹1 crore mark is alarming. Having already lost vital promotional momentum due to a week-long certification delay by the CBFC, Aakhri Sawal is running out of time and desperately needs an unprecedented, miraculous surge on Sunday to salvage its theatrical run.
