March 26, 2025: The much-anticipated remake of The War of the Roses, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, is set to hit theaters on August 29, 2025, announced Searchlight Pictures. The modern adaptation of Warren Adler’s 1981 novel follows the dramatic, darkly comedic story of a couple whose seemingly perfect life unravels amidst professional and personal tensions.
Directed by Jay Roach, the film reimagines the 1989 classic, which featured Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in the lead roles. Written by Tony McNamara, the new version focuses on Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch), a married couple whose once idyllic life takes a turn when Theo’s career begins to falter while Ivy’s ambitions soar. As professional failures and unmet desires build, their relationship becomes an intense battlefield filled with fierce competition and growing resentment.
The remake also features an all-star supporting cast, including Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoe Chao, Belinda Bromilow, and Kate McKinnon. With such an impressive lineup, the film promises to bring fresh energy to the original’s bitterly hilarious take on love, rivalry, and the disintegration of a marriage.
Produced by Roach, Michelle Graham, Ed Sinclair, Tom Carver, and Cumberbatch’s production company SunnyMarch, the film is part of a highly anticipated group of major releases slated for August 2025, which also includes the horror-comedy The Toxic Avenger and Darren Aronofsky’s crime thriller Caught Stealing starring Austin Butler and Regina King.
Fans of the original The War of the Roses and newcomers alike are sure to look forward to this dark comedy that blends sharp wit with a biting look at the complexities of relationships.
