In a move to maintain decorum and ensure smooth logistics, Cannes prohibits full nudity and “voluminous” clothing, including long trains and large accessories.
Cannes, May 13:
The 78th Cannes Film Festival, which opens today, has announced a strict ban on full nudity and excessively voluminous clothing on the red carpet, sparking discussions across the global film and fashion communities.
The decision follows a series of high-profile red carpet controversies, including a topless demonstrator in 2022 and Bianca Censori’s sheer outfit at the Grammys, which reportedly influenced the move toward more regulated fashion protocols.

🎬 Official Statement from Cannes
“The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law,” the festival’s statement reads.
The charter also grants Cannes officials the right to deny entry to individuals whose attire might obstruct guest movement or complicate seating during screenings.

👗 What’s Banned?
- Full nudity on the red carpet
- Voluminous clothing (e.g. oversized gowns with long trains)
- Tote bags, backpacks, and large bags during gala screenings
The festival cited practical reasons behind the decision, including crowd flow and seating challenges. Long trains and excessively wide dresses are specifically mentioned as causing logistical hindrances inside theaters.
While the rules aim to provide clarity, they remain vague on whether outfits like Greta Gerwig’s Barbie-pink gown with a medium-length train would violate the updated charter.
