In a significant move following his historic victory in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Chief Minister Vijay has reportedly turned his focus back to his cinematic swan song, Jana Nayagan.

According to reports surfacing on Thursday, May 14, 2026, the actor-turned-politician has allegedly instructed producer Venkat K. Narayana of KVN Productions to immediately return to Chennai from the ongoing Cannes Film Festival. The directive aims to expedite the stalled release process of the ₹500 crore political action drama, which has been mired in censorship and legal battles for months.

Narayana, who was in France for the film market, has reportedly cut his visit short following the CM’s intervention. The project, billed as Vijay’s final film before he transitions into full-time politics with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has been stuck with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The board had previously raised objections to several scenes, citing potential concerns over public sentiment and the film’s overt political themes, which were scrutinized during the intense election period.
A Troubled Road to the Big Screen
Jana Nayagan was originally scheduled for a grand theatrical release on January 9, but the lack of a censor certificate led to a prolonged legal battle. While the makers initially moved the court, they later withdrew the case to approach the CBFC Revising Committee. With the elections now concluded and Vijay assuming the office of the Chief Minister, fresh efforts are being made to clear the bureaucratic hurdles that have kept the “farewell film” from his massive fanbase.
The film’s journey has not been without scandal; on April 9, an HD version of the movie was leaked online, leading to the arrest of nine individuals by the Tamil Nadu Cyber Crime Police. The leak sparked a controversy within the industry, resulting in the suspension of editor Pradeep E. Ragav by the editors’ association for rule violations involving unregistered freelance staff, though he was cleared of direct involvement in the leak itself.
The ₹500 Crore Political Spectacle
Directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan boasts a stellar pan-Indian cast including Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj, Bobby Deol, and Gautham Menon. Fans are eagerly awaiting a new release date, with rumors suggesting a mid-2026 window once the Revising Committee grants the necessary clearance.
For the people of Tamil Nadu, the film holds immense significance as it bridges the gap between Vijay’s legendary career as a superstar and his new role as the state’s administrative head. As the producer touches down in Chennai, an official announcement regarding the certification and the final release date is expected shortly.
