The “King of Comedy,” David Dhawan, has sent ripples through the film industry by hinting that his upcoming directorial venture, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, might be his final curtain call.

The veteran filmmaker revealed that after a career spanning decades and dozens of hits, he is ready to transition into a new role simply being “Varun’s father.” David cited health concerns and the wishes of his son, Varun Dhawan, as primary reasons for considering retirement, noting that Varun has been increasingly protective of his health following a recent hospitalization during the film’s shoot.

The film marks the fourth collaboration between the father-son duo, following Main Tera Hero, Judwaa 2, and Coolie No. 1. David praised Varun’s growth as an actor, specifically mentioning his moving performance in the upcoming Border 2, which left the filmmaker emotional. “As long as I am making films, it’s good to do one or two with my son,” David remarked, while clarifying that post-retirement, he intends to step back from the professional creative process and focus entirely on family life. “I won’t be involved in his pictures, but I’ll be there with him all the time,” he added.

Produced by Ramesh Taurani, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai boasts a stellar ensemble including Mrunal Thakur, Pooja Hegde, Mouni Roy, and Maniesh Paul. The project has seen a strategic shift in its release timeline; originally slated for a June release, the makers have advanced the date to May 22, 2026, to avoid a massive box-office clash with Yash’s highly anticipated Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups. This move ensures David’s potential swan song receives the solo spotlight it deserves.
