The 69-year-old star of Gladiator II received both a baptismal certificate and a minister’s licence, putting him on the path to ordination. The ceremony took place at the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem, New York, with the service being live-streamed by the First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ Eastern New York via Facebook.
In the days leading up to his 70th birthday, Washington shared his joy and reflection on the milestone. “In one week I turn 70. It took a while, but I’m here,” he said, expressing gratitude after the baptism. He also thanked his wife, Pauletta Washington, for her support in his spiritual journey.
Throughout his career, Washington has been open about his Christian faith. In a previous interview with Esquire, he boldly stated that while religion may be a sensitive or “unfashionable” topic in Hollywood, he is unafraid to speak openly about his beliefs. “I’m unafraid. I don’t care what anyone thinks,” he wrote in an essay for the magazine. He added that while discussing faith in Hollywood might not be common, it doesn’t diminish the fact that many in the industry share his beliefs. Washington also pointed out that there is no “Hollywood” when it comes to religion, emphasizing the individuality of each person’s spiritual journey.
Meanwhile, Washington is continuing to thrive in his professional career. He is currently receiving acclaim for his role in Gladiator II, Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated sequel to the 2000 epic. I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make, probably not that many. I want to do things that I haven’t done.” He revealed some exciting upcoming projects, including portraying Othello at the age of 70, playing Hannibal, and collaborating with director Steve McQueen on a future film. Washington confirmed his involvement with the Marvel franchise, adding, “After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, I’m going to do the film Othello. After that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’m going to retire.”
