Businessman Lalit Modi has spoken openly about his past relationship with Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen and strongly defended her against the “gold digger” label she faced online after their relationship became public.
A few years ago, photos of Lalit Modi and Sushmita Sen together had gone viral on social media. The pictures sparked widespread discussion online, especially after fans noticed the actress wearing a large diamond ring in one of the images. Following the viral posts, Sushmita was criticised by some social media users and was unfairly called a “gold digger.”
Now, in a recent conversation with Humans of Bombay, Lalit Modi addressed the controversy and praised Sushmita Sen for being financially independent and self-made.
Lalit Modi Says Sushmita Paid For Everything
Speaking about their relationship, Lalit Modi said Sushmita Sen never depended on anyone financially and often paid for expenses herself.
He said, “Sushmita is a beautiful, successful and self-made woman. She has more diamonds than almost anyone I know, and she earned everything herself.”
Modi further revealed that during their relationship, Sushmita would rarely allow anyone else to pay for outings or expenses.
“There wasn’t a time when we went out and I had to pay for anything. She paid for everything. I was like a kept boyfriend,” he said.
Defending the actress against criticism, Modi added that calling her a “gold digger” was completely unfair.
“If anything, Lalit was the diamond digger. She is truly a diamond,” he stated.
Lalit Modi Calls Sushmita ‘An Amazing Woman’
Lalit Modi also shared that Sushmita Sen remains a very special person in his life despite their breakup.
He said the actress helped him grow emotionally and personally and continues to remain a dear friend.
Modi also praised Sushmita for raising her daughters, Renee and Alisah, as a single mother.
“She’s an amazing woman and what she has done as a single mother is remarkable,” he said.
Viral Instagram Post Was Shared During An Argument
Lalit Modi also recalled the now-famous Instagram post through which he publicly confirmed their relationship.
According to him, the post was shared spontaneously while the two were arguing during a flight.
He revealed that Sushmita did not believe he would actually upload the pictures online.
“She said, ‘You’re not going to post this.’ I laughed and pressed the button,” Modi shared.
He also clarified that the post was never scripted and that Sushmita never asked him to delete it afterward.
